As you probably appreciate already, regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your health. You will reduce the risk of chronic diseases, maintain a healthy body weight, boost your mental health, and you will quite possibly sleep better too.
However, if you’re a fitness beginner, you shouldn’t jump right into something (unless you are taking up the long jump). There are a few things you should do first, so let’s dive in (we aren’t suggesting you take up diving) and consider a few essential tips.
#1: Have a chat with your doctor
When you start to exercise, you will be putting your body at risk of an injury as it won’t be used to a lot of physical exertion. A health check-up is always advisable, especially if you already have health concerns, as your doctor will advise you on what types of exercise you might need to avoid. Hopefully, they will give you the all-clear but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
#2: Take it easy at the beginning
As a fitness beginner, you need to give your body time to adapt to physical activity. For this reason, you shouldn’t enter yourself into a local marathon or do anything else that will push your body beyond what it is capable of doing. Low-intensity exercises are the best places to start, such as walking, light jogging, and swimming. You can enter yourself into a marathon later, and do other exercises that are more strenuous when you have attained a few beginner fitness goals.
#3: Don’t forget to warm up and cool down
Before you embark on your workout, it’s always important to do a few warm-up exercises. By doing so, you will prepare your body for what is to come and prevent the risk of an injury. The cool-down period is important too, as this will help you to resume your normal breathing pattern and decrease the chances of muscle soreness. A light walk or a few gentle stretches is advised after your workout routine.
#4: Take time out to rest
Your body will need to rest after exercising so don’t hop from one workout activity to another. Take time out to unwind afterwards and don’t do anything too strenuous. If you’re exercising daily, you should also book in a rest day to give your body time to heal and recover. Should you experience soreness, there are things you can do to relieve the pain. Take a warm bath, give yourself a massage (or get someone to do it for you), and apply a heat compress, ice pack, or CBD Patches to any inflamed areas.
#5: Do something you know you will enjoy
A lot of people give up on exercise, not only because they push themselves too hard at the beginning, but also because they get bored. For this reason, do something you think you might enjoy. You could get started with yoga, take up a low-intensity activity such as cycling or dancing, or a workout class that friends of yours are already taking.
